Trump To Reopen Alcatraz, Places Tariffs On U.S. Movies Made Abroad
He’s governing like a guy who watches Fox News on mushrooms
Donald Trump just announced he's reopening Alcatraz. Yes, the infamous federal prison on an island in San Francisco Bay that was shut down in the 1960s for being too expensive, too brutal, and too inhumane.
Last night
Trump declared on Truth Social that he’s instructed the Bureau of Prisons to “rebuild and reopen” Alcatraz — where he plans to send “America’s most violent, vicious, and repeat offenders.”
This is beyond deranged
Not only was Alcatraz prison shut down to harsh treatment and living conditions for the inmates but it also cost about 3x more per prisoner than any other federal prison — because everything (food, fuel, water, staff) had to be shipped to and from the island.
So just to recap
The “fiscal conservative” who said he was cutting “wasteful government spending” with DOGE now plans to use our tax dollars to reopen a super expensive, highly inefficient prison from the 1960s.
P.S.
If he’s serious about sending “violent, vicious, and repeat offenders” to Alcatraz… he should start by sending the repeat offender with 91 criminal charges and 34 felony convictions who’s currently occupying the White House.
Meanwhile
If you thought commanding Alcatraz prison to reopen was bad, his latest idea is a whole new level of idiotic:
The movie tariff
Following his grand scheme to rebuild Alcatraz, Trump then announced he’d be imposing 100% tariffs on films produced outside of the U.S. in order to “save” the “dying movie business.”
This is genuinely stupid — as many American production companies film outside of the U.S. to save production costs and benefit from foreign tax incentives.
By doing this, he would actually be harming America’s movie business — making U.S. films more expensive to make.
By the way
What exactly would the tariff be placed on? The camera equipment? The cast? The crew? The script? The director?
How does one even go about placing a “tariff” on a film?
Clownish stuff from an individual who has no idea how anything works, other than holding onto an extremely warped “America good, foreigners bad” worldview.
The takeaway
The President of the United States thinks a trade deficit means we’re getting ripped off by foreign countries — when all it actually means is that we purchase more from them than they do from us.
He wants to use American taxpayer dollars to rebuild a remote prison for a political stunt, and place an impossible 100% tariff on foreign-produced films — many of which are produced by American companies.
Somebody get this guy into a nursing home, load him up with medication, and send him far away from the Oval Office.
Wrap-up
Trump orders Alcatraz prison to be rebuilt and reopened
He announces 100% tariffs on movies produced overseas
He still hasn’t lowered gas or grocery prices
Another crazy start to an even crazier week. More lunacy to come, I’m sure.
Happy Monday, guys!
Alcatraz closed in’63 because it was too expensive to maintain and falling apart. How much will it cost to renovate today. What will it cost to maintain? How will staff get to work? Yes, it will be fairly secure…who will take their chances in the cold water with great whites? Definitely not cost effective.
