The babysitter I had growing up immigrated from El Salvador. Her name was Blanca, and she always had a smile on her face and called me her “little niño.”

I was too young to comprehend what “seeking asylum” meant. I didn’t know that she cared for her real 5 niños at home, and sent money back to her family that lived in poverty across the border.
