How To Avoid Bernie/Hillary Clash That Cost Democrats 2016 Election
Our Democracy depends on Progressives and Democrats coming together in 2024
Dash Dobrofsky | The Gen Z Perspective
Young people want aggressive action on climate change, they want assault weapons banned, they want women’s reproductive freedoms enshrined, and they want real solutions to mend America’s gigantic wealth gap that gets wider by the year.
Let’s be honest: the monthly cost of rent just to live in a tiny studio apartment is astronomical. Entry-level jobs are paying minimum wage — which seemingly hasn’t increased since Vietnam. And the cost of higher education is 100x more expensive than prior generations had to pay for — something Gen Z (and the parents of Gen Z) are having to deal with.
These are real problems that are creating immense pressure, financial hardships, and stress for young people across this country.
What happens when candidates don’t adequately address all of these enormous issues plaguing our generation? Young people become disillusioned by the system altogether — alas, what happened in 2016 with the massive youth surge for Bernie Sanders. And because young people were so fed up with the system that seemingly ignored their material needs, they boycotted Hillary Clinton — who they perceived as an “establishment politician” — and allowed a fascist monster (Trump) to walk into the Oval Office.
I don’t want our country to repeat the exact same problem that nearly killed us in 2016 — allowing an Insurrectionist to repeal environmental regulations, give tax breaks to major corporations, appoint 3 SCOTUS Justices who would go on to take away women’s reproductive freedoms, and refuse to enforce gun safety laws (AKA the worst possible outcome for Progressives and Democrats).
However, I feel that we are going to be entering the exact same scenario in 2024 — a clash between Progressives & Democrats v. Trump — giving young people the power to either make or break the election, once again.
If Democrats want to win this time around, here’s what needs to happen:
